WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BRANCH

The Western Australian branch was formed in December 1956, and the committee is based in Perth.

The branch committee organises an exciting program of activities which includes a Choral Festival, tours of local churches and workshops on hymn singing and choosing music for worship.

An important part of the annual program is the Annual Choristers' Course, usually held in a country location. The course is held each year in July and is open to all young people interested in church music.

A history of the branch has been recorded by Barbara Good in: Served with Joy: The Story of the Royal School of Church Music in Western Australia (© 1982 and 2006). For more information contact the branch chairperson, Deirdre Russell (wa@rscmaustralia.org.au).

Previous Branch Events

Choristers' Course

The Albany Senior High School Residential College is the venue for this year’s Choristers’ Camp, where students enjoy singing, various activities, and making new friends. This year’s Music Director is Dominic Perissinotto, and John Beaverstock will be accompanist. Tom and Gill Burbidge are Camp Administrators.

This year the full residential fee is $350, with an early bird discount for registrations before 28th May. There is also a reduced fee for families when more than one child attends. An additional cost will be for coach fares for those requiring transport to Albany. There is also a non-residential fee available on enquiry to the Administrators. Bursaries are available to assist with fees. Application forms are to be sent to Mrs. Deirdre Russell, 32 Second Avenue, Rossmoyne, and can be obtained from the Administrators.

Camp is an ideal way to introduce the love of singing in a choir, in 4 part harmony, as part of the worship service in a non-threatening and enjoyable way. Services will be held in the Uniting Church, the Catholic Church, and the Anglican Church when music prepared will be sung.

If you have a child, grandchild, or other young relative who has a love of singing, please consider allowing them to come to camp, which is in the first week of school holidays. Full details are available from Tom and Gill Burbidge on 9332 4994, or email tburbid@bigpond.net.au.

Donations to assist with running of the camp, or to sponsor a child would be most welcome, and can be sent to T & G Burbidge, 17 Beresford Place, Leeming, 6149.

Congregational Hymn Singing

Sheila is organizing another Congregational Singing afternoon on SUNDAY, 21st AUGUST this year, and as promised it is to be held at St. Brendan’s Anglican Church, Cnr. Currie Street and Parkland Drive, Warnbro. Yes, it’s a long way away for most of us, but remember that the people from Warnbro have come to us several times, so now we have to do the right thing and go to them!

How are you going to get there? You could go by train, but if you do, the church is approximately 2 kms from Warnbro Station, so you will have to persuade the locals to pick you up! OR Sheila has booked a bus to leave North Beach at 11.00am, calling at Scarborough, Wembley and All Saints’ College, Bull Creek, on the way, and she needs 50 people to join her, or else she is going to be very much outof- pocket! Please book your seat!

It has been arranged that if we take our own picnic lunch, St. Brendan’s will supply tea and coffee and a hall to eat in, at about 12.30pm, and we will start singing at 2.00pm. Of course, the bus will be returning via the same places, and the return fare will be $18.

Please remember that this is not an afternoon for choirs, but for anybody who loves to sing, and especially those who love to sing and not be heard, so encourage your congregation to support this event. As usual, if you or your church would like to choose a hymn/song for everyone to sing, and to book your seats on the bus, you need to let Sheila know at 9447.0824, sbyfield@three.com.au or 59, Alvaston Drive, Carine.
